With the Chinese soon to take over the running of Hong Kong there has been some doubt over the future of the thriving racing and betting scene there, particularly as Chairman Deng has reportedly had 32,000 mainland Chinese arrested for gambling.
But, according to Royal Hong Kong jockey Club chief, General Sir John Archer, racing and gambling should be safe. ‘They’re against gambling’, he told the Daily Express in March 1986, ‘But Deng’s son came to see the race here and quietly had a ten dollar bet.
