She was in bands during her teens and played the synthesiser and sang. she tried everything from punk and progressive rock to jazz and, finally, pop. She even entered the TV show Pop Idol in 2001, but was rejected in the first rounds. Her first success came with the electro group Dead Disco when she was at Leeds University. The group released a single, but she left to write her own songs.
She sang her songs sitting on the edge of her bed, in her pyjamas. She made a cover version of a famous song every week, and then recorded her own music. Record producers became interested and she received an invitation to the BBC’s Later with Jools Holland show.
